Cupra says the Tavascan SUV will look as wild as the concept

Spanish electric SUV is still in the works, and it should look quite like this

What if a Lamborghini Urus had all its sharp edges and angular creases shaved off with a Gillette razor, and then swapped out its old-school bi-turbo V8 for an all-electric drivetrain?

Then you’d probably end up with something that looked quite like this: the Cupra Tavascan. Seat’s sporty Spanish offshoot revealed this concept car way back in September 2019, so you’d be forgiven for presuming it was simply a clay modelling fantasy. Apparently not.

According to Cupra boss Wayne Griffiths, the Tavascan is very much alive, and won’t be watered down from this head-turning concept.

“We’re moving on with the Tavascan’s development,” he confirms to TG.com. “We have not announced exactly where and when and how, but it’s our big dream that we’re trying to make real, and the design development is continued absolutely in line with the show car.”

The concept had front and rear electric motors offering a total of 302bhp. Right on the money for a sportish SUV – in fact, that’s the same sort of power you get from a petrol-fed Cupra Ateca or Formentor. But what of the looks?

“We said to the designers: ‘You can’t come up with a car that looks like a Batmobile that we can’t do in reality afterwards. Anything you come up with, we have to be able to realise’,” Griffiths explains.

“We don’t want a big let-down, that you have a provocative show car and then the production car that is totally toned down because of reality and you can’t do the test parts and so on. The final car will be very, very near to the show car.”

What do you reckon, internet? Would this dramatic-looking electro-crossover tempt you away from the likes of Ford’s retro-themed Mustang Mach-E, or Tesla’s Model Y minivan?
