Single Gear Transmission Makes The Koenigsegg Regera Unlike Any Other Hypercar
The Koenigsegg Regera isn’t just special because it is the quickest car from 0-400-0 km/h, but also due to the fact that it doesn’t have a normal transmission.
When the Swedish automaker unveiled the Regera five and a half years ago, the world was left bamboozled by the fact that, rather than a normal gearbox, it had an innovative Direct Drive transmission with just a single gear. What is it like to ride shotgun in a hypercar with such an unusual transmission? Well, that’s exactly what this video shows.
Filmed at the airstrip next to Koenigsegg’s factory, this clip shows a Regera development car being put through its paces. Watching and hearing it accelerate to over 300 km/h (186 mph) with just a single gear is pretty bizarre.
During one run, the hypercar accelerates from 40 km/h to 300 km/h all without changing gear. It’s particularly wild to see how the engine stays at approximately 5,000 rpm from 100 km/h (62 mph) through to roughly 220 km/h (137 mph). It’s only when the car accelerates past 230 km/h (143 mph) that the revs start to consistently build.
Allowing the Koenigsegg to build speed at such insane speeds is a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 with three electric motors that combine to produce 1,500 hp and 944 lb-ft (1,280 Nm) of torque.
In 2019, the Regera set a new record in the 0-400-0 km/h (0-248-0 mph) sprint with a time of 31.49 seconds. In doing so, it eclipsed the previous record of 33.29 seconds that was held by the Koenigsegg Agera RS, which in turn was significantly quicker than the Bugatti Chiron that needs 41.96 seconds.
