The Old-School Lexus GX Gets a New-School Display (Finally!)

The Old-School Lexus GX Gets a New-School Display (Finally!)

There’s also some sweet-looking new paint and a black-line option package.

The Lexus GX is a proper anachronism in 2021. The tall, old-style 4×4 SUV gets poor fuel economy, uses an ancient transmission, and until now had an infotainment setup that was straight out of the early 2000s. For the 2022 model year, Lexus is fixing what was potentially the GX’s biggest flaw—well, its biggest tech flaw—and finally giving it a thoroughly modern infotainment system upgrade.

Almost the entire center stack of the 2022 GX is new, and sitting atop it is a 10.3-inch infotainment display that finally does away with Lexus’ truly outdated Enform system, which used to live in the control panel itself. The new display is bang up to date with other Lexus models’ setups and has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration right out of the box. The rest of the controls have been changed to support the new system, and the dashboard is mostly new, though, get this, it still has a CD player(!).

The rest of the changes for 2022 aren’t as big as the new display. In addition to a new Nori Green color, there is a Black Line special edition that’s based on the Premium GX460. Black Line trimmings include blacked-out 18-inch wheels, a smoked grille surround, black front and rear bumper accents, garnet red tail lamps, black roof rails, and body colored door handles. Other handy features like intuitive parking assist, navigation, and power folding heated mirrors are standard across the GX range.
Even though the GX is now 12 years old, it’s still comfortable on the road and massively capable when the going gets rocky, muddy, sandy, or otherwise. It’s also one of an ever-shrinking number of cars and SUVs you can buy with a V-8 under the hood. It’s safe to say we dig the GX for its old-school charms, and these improvements for 2022 make it an even more desirable SUV without neutering its essential character. There’s no word on if the price will increase thanks to the new kit, but we expect the starting sum to be similar to the GX’s current asking price of $54,950.
