Voice commands are a must-have for so many Android Auto users out there, and it’s all for a good reason: they allow them to control essential features, such as phone calls and navigation, without looking at the screen, thus reducing the distraction substantially.

But as many of us figured out the hard way, voice commands don’t always work properly on Android Auto, and it’s all because of various problems hitting Google Assistant.

One such issue causes the assistant to lag significantly when Android Auto is running on the head unit, with users first reporting the issue back in August.

“Sometimes the pop-up with the voice bars will appear, and after a few seconds, the system makes the acknowledgment beep to start talking. I issue my commands and it just hangs there for many more seconds. Sometimes the pop-up just closes again. Sometimes it processed my command,” one user who took to Google’s official forums explains in a post.
Several others have already confirmed similar problems with Assistant in their cars.

While Google has so far remained tight-lipped on everything related to the problem, the Mountain View-based search giant has recently revealed it’s investigating struggle with Google Assistant.

And while Google looking into the whole thing is good news, you’d better not hold your breath for a fix. Not only it took Google so many months to start looking into the problem, but the company hasn’t provided an ETA as to when more information would be shared on it, so for now, the only thing we know is that an investigation has already started.

Is there anything you can try to restore Google Assistant on Android Auto until this fix lands?

Not really, as those how previously tried generic workarounds like clearing the cache, reinstalling the Google app, or downgrading to an earlier version of Android Auto say nothing worked, with the problem still occurring in their cars.
