News of a turbocharged Mazda CX-30 isn’t necessarily new. We learned the crossover was getting a literal power boost buck in August, but it’s now an official word coming straight from the horse’s mouth. Say hello to the 250-horsepower Mazda CX-30 Turbo.

That is, it boasts such power provided you fill the fuel tank with the good stuff. Mazda explains the turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine develops 250 hp and 320 pound-feet of torque when running 93 octane fuel. You can run lower grade gasoline just fine, but power dips to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of twist at 87 octane. Either way, it’s a healthy (and welcome) bump from the 186 ponies you get in the standard CX-30. Paired with all-wheel-drive and a tuned suspension that welcomes spirited driving, the new CX-30 Turbo is poised to put the sport in sport-utility.

On the utilitarian side of the equation, Mazda offers the 2021 CX-30 Turbo with new driver-assist and safety features. Smart City Brake Support Reverse with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking is a clumsy way to say the CX-30 has an auto-brake feature when backing up. If obstacles or crossing traffic is detected behind the SUV, brakes will automatically be applied at speeds between 2 and 4 mph. Going forward, the CX-30 Turbo features Traffic Jam Assist which offers automatic steering inputs at speeds up to 40 mph. A 360-degree monitor view is also available.

A sportier presence on the outside accompanies the added power. Standard-issue 18-inch black aluminum wheels are the primary upgrade, but if you look closely you’ll also see gloss black door mirrors and larger exhaust pipes out the back. You’ll also find a turbo badge on the rear gate, and while the interior doesn’t differ from the current CX-30, it’s still a lovely place to be.

Mazda doesn’t offer pricing for the US-bound CX-30 at this time. However, our previous report indicated it should start around $30,000, not including a $1,100 destination charge.
